In honor of National Bite Prevention Week, just be a tree!
What should you do if you feel threatened by a dog? Why, just be a tree of course! Standing as still as a tree with your arms crossed at your chest may be just the thing to keep you from being bitten.
If you are approached by a dog, stand still, cross your arms and look away. Ignore the dog and he will lose interest and leave. Then back away. Don’t turn your back, scream or run. If you are attacked, put an item such as a purse, jacket or backpack between you and the dog. If you are knocked to the ground, curl into a ball and cover your ears with your hands. Try to remain motionless. Other tips for preventing bites include:
*Never touch an animal you don’t know
*Always ask permission before touching or petting
*Do not approach or touch a dog that is tied up
*Do not take food or toys away from a dog
The safe way to pet a dog is to allow him to sniff your hand with your palm down. Then pet him on the back or side rather than the top of the head.
